A few things about me

I was born in Sardinia (1971) and I started to play the piano at an early age.

When I was 17 I came in contact with jazz and fusion and my predilection for improvised music became clear.

In 1998 I moved to Holland to study at the "Koninklijk Conservatorium" in Den Haag and now I live in Brussels.

After making a piano duo recording, a duo with voice, two solos, one quartet, and one trio recording (which deserves a particular mention since I had the honour to play with two jazz legends : Gary Peacock and Paul Motian"), I felt that it was the moment to bring to life an idea I had in my mind since quite a few years. A bigger ensemble than a quartet, but not a big band. At the end , I've decided for a Septet.

About "The Monkey and The Monk"

I did not know exactly what I wanted to write for a septet but I certainly knew that I needed good musicians, able to play in completely different contexts (complex changing structures, totally free, in section, solo), people who have the necessary sensitivity to understand when it is time to follow and when it's time to take the lead.
Starting with the great musicians that play in my quartet (Ben Sluijs on alto saxophone and flute, Manolo Cabras on double bass and Marek Patrman on drums), I completed the line-up with Lynn Cassiers on voice and electronics, Laurent Blondiau on trumpet and Flugelhorn and Sam Comerford on tenor, bass saxophone and clarinet. I have to say it’s a magnificent band!!

Later on, when we started working on this project, I was amazed to see how fast and well they learned my music and made it their own. 

Once I had the band, I started to write thinking about these musicians and it slowly came out that I was trying to bring the concept of my solo work into a larger ensemble.

In a solo situation you have all the freedom you need to play also with the forms, not only with the changes and the rhythm.

You can play a song and stop all of a sudden and for instance put a few bars in a loop, or play the melody or part of it and then go somewhere else by transforming it.

When you play with the forms and with the sound combinations that such an ensemble provides, you see an endless universe of possibilities in front of you.

At the end "The Monkey and The Monk // Concerto for Jazz Septet in Three Movements" was born.

The three movements are a series of compositions connected to each other with some solo, duo and trio moments, sometimes completely improvised, sometimes with some melodic indications, and some other times the tunes are just connected.

Every movement is around 20 minutes long. In the vinyl version of this work (the Concerto will be available on cd and double vinyl) every movement takes one side and on side four there is a piano solo suite in four parts : "The Unbearable Lightness of Freedom" (A little tribute to Milan Kundera).

The topic of the work is my personal search for freedom. The Monkey and The Monk are the spoilt, scared kid and the inflexible judge inside of me constantly fighting.

My message is a message of hope. After a long time fighting with each other, a moment will come when The Monkey and The Monk will begin to work together, but, to quote the beautiful text written by Laura Mura for “Gus" (the composition that closes the concert and which is the only one that I haven't written myself (my dear friend and brother Manolo Cabras is the composer of this beautiful tune)):

"Things must take their course, it's well known, still, I find myself here, claiming a spark"

As you can imagine, in order to bring this septet to life I needed help. Especially financial support.

I consider myself very lucky to have found people close to me that believed in the quality of this project and that could help me to make it happen.

Another crucial partner for the making of The Monkey and The Monk was "Werkplaats Walter", a great concert hall in Brussels, founded and run by Lien van Steendam and Teun Verbruggen.

They believed in the project and they invited us to have a five days residency and a concert. That happened in October 2021. Here you can see part of the concert.

Thanks to their presence I now got two partners investing in my project, and with their precious help I could convince the FWB (Federation Wallonie Bruxelles), the VGC (Vlaamsegemeenschap) and the FBM (Fund Belgian Music – Koning Boudewijnstichting) of the quality of this work and they decided to grant me a subsidy.

So, we had the residency to prepare the Concerto, a first concert, and two weeks later, thanks to the subsidies, I could bring the band to the "Dada Studios" in Brussels to record the album

We did also some improvised sessions. A collective improvisation with the title "It's just what arises" will be available for download for those who will pre-order a copy of the record.

Purpose of this crowdfunding

The money I got from the FWB, the VGC and the FWB has been crucial for the making of this record, but unfortunately it’s not enough to cover all the expenses that such a project requires.

This is why I'm launching this crowdfunding which is more of a pre-sale.

We still need 5000 euros to pay part of the printing of the vinyls (500 copies) and to invest in promotion, in order to give it as much visibility as possible and to get more opportunities to perform it live.

The release will be on the occasion of the festival "Nuoro Jazz 2022", in Italy , the 26th of August.

There will be also a pre-release concert at the SMAK Contemporary Arts Museum in Gent on the 5th of May.

Alcune cose su di me

Sono nato in Sardegna (1971) ed ho iniziato ad avvicinarmi al pianoforte molto presto. 
All'età di 17 anni venni a contatto per la prima volta con il Jazz e la Fusion, e divenne subito evidente la mia predilezione per la musica improvvisata. 
Nel 1998 mi sono trasferito in Olanda per studiare al "Koninklijk Conservatorium" all'Aja ed ora vivo a Bruxelles. 
Dopo aver pubblicato 6 dischi (1 Piano duo, 1 duo con voce, 2 piano solo, 1 quartetto ed un trio (che merita una menzione speciale visto che ho avuto l'onore di suonare con due leggende della storia del Jazz, Gary Peacock e Paul Motian),  ho sentito chiaramente che era arrivato il momento di concretizzare un'idea che avevo in testa già da qualche anno. Scrivere per un ensemble più grande, ma non un'orchestra. Alla fine mi sono deciso per un Settetto.

The Monkey and The Monk

Non sapevo esattamente quale musica volessi scrivere per un settetto ma sapevo con certezza che avrei avuto bisogno di ottimi musicisti, capaci di esprimersi in contesti diversi (momenti di improvvisazione libera, strutture armoniche complesse, in sezione, da soli, etc.). Persone capaci di capire quando essere leader e quando essere gregari.

Partendo dagli ottimi musicisti che compongono il mio quartetto (Ben Sluijs al sax alto e flauto contralto, Manolo Cabras al Contrabbasso e Marek Patrman alla batteria), ho completato il gruppo con altri fuoriclasse della scena Jazz Belga : Lynn Cassiers alla voce ed elettronica, Laurent Blondiau alla tromba e flicorno, Sam Comerford ai Sax tenore e basso e clarinetto. Devo dirlo, una band fantastica!! Quando più avanti abbiamo cominciato a lavorare sulla musica che avevo scritto si sono dimostrati all'altezza delle aspettative. 

Formato il gruppo ho iniziato a scrivere pensando a questi musicisti, e ad un certo punto mi sono accorto che stavo cercando di applicare il mio modo di affrontare il piano solo ad un ensemble più grande.

In una situazione di solo si ha la libertà di giocare a modificare le strutture in tempo reale, non solamente il tempo e l'armonia. Per esempio si può iniziare a suonare una composizione e fermarsi all'improvviso e mettere una parte della composizione stessa in loop, o suonare la melodia di un brano liberamente e poi trasformandola andare da un'altra parte. Aggiungendo le possibilità sonore che un gruppo del genere ti offre, ti trovi davanti ad un universo infinito di possibilità.
Il risultato è stato :" The Monkey and The Monk - Concerto for Jazz Septet in 3 Movements".
I tre movimenti sono una serie di composizioni connesse fra loro da momenti di solo, duo, trio, a volte improvvisati o con indicazioni di genere melodico o estetico. Ogni movimento dura circa 20 minuti. 
Nella versione in vinile (sarà prodotto in cd e doppio vinile) ogni movimento occupa una facciata, e nella quarta facciata c'è una suite in quattro parti (Piano Solo) che si intitola"The Unbearable Lightness of Freedom"(L'insostenibile leggerezza della libertà), un piccolo omaggio a Milan Kundera.

L'argomento trattato in questo lavoro è la mia personale ricerca della libertà. La scimmia ed il Monaco sono il bambino viziato ed impaurito ed il giudice inflessibile che, dentro di me, non fanno altro che scontrarsi. 

Il mio messaggio è comunque un messaggio di speranza. Dopo una lunga lotta, arriverà il momento che la scimmia ed il monaco cominceranno a collaborare invece che combattersi, ma, e qui cito il bellissimo testo che Laura Mura ha scritto per "Gus" (Il brano che chiude il concerto e che è l'unico che non ho scritto io ma il mio amico fraterno Manolo Cabras)

Come si può facilmente immaginare, per poter dare vita a questo progetto avevo bisogno di aiuto, sopratutto economico.
Mi considero molto fortunato per avere trovato persone vicine a me che ci hanno creduto e mi hanno aiutato a farlo esistere.
La prima persona coinvolta è il mio amico/produttore/impresario/manager Rogè Verstraete, creatore e proprietario dell'etichetta belga "el NEGOCITO Records".

Anche loro hanno creduto nel mio progetto e ci hanno invitato a fare una residenza di 5 giorni ed un concerto. Questo è successo ad Ottobre 2021.

Grazie alla loro presenza ho guadagnato 2 partners, entrambi decisi ad investire parte delle loro risorse economiche nel mio progetto, e con il loro prezioso aiuto sono riuscito a convincere la FWB (Federation Wallonie Bruxelles) , la VGC (Vlaamsegemeenschap) e la FBM (Fund Belgian Music - KoningBoudewijnstichting) della qualità di questo lavoro, ottenendo un buon finanziamento.

A quel punto avevo ottenuto una Residenza per preparare il Concerto, una prima esibizione in pubblico, e due settimane dopo , grazie a i sussidi, sono riuscito a portare il gruppo a registrare ai "Dada Studios" (Bruxelles)

Scopo di questa raccolta fondi

L'aiuto economico che ho ricevuto da FWB,VGC e FWB è stato fondamentale per realizzare questo disco, ma sfortunatamente non abbastanza per coprire tutte le spese che un progetto del genere richiede.

Per questa ragione abbiamo deciso di lanciare questa raccolta fondi che in realtà è più una pre-vendita.

Abbiamo bisogno ancora di circa 5000 euro per pagare completamente la stampa dei vinili (500 copie) e per investire in promozione, per dargli la maggiore visibilità possibile in modo da avere più opportunità di eseguirlo dal vivo.

L'uscita ufficiale sarà in occasione del Festival "Nuoro Jazz 2022", in Italia il 26 Agosto.

Ci sarà anche un concerto "pre-uscita" che prevederà una pre-vendita fra i presenti , il 5 Maggio al museo SMAK a Gent.

Chiunque deciderà che vale la pena acquistare una copia di questo lavoro avrà, oltre che della buona musica, la mia gratitudine, per aver creduto e contribuito alla realizzazione di "The Monkey and The Monk".
